I helped set up the new server and move data from the old server to it. We kept using it for about four more years.”

2. Tell me about a time when you and a coworker had different ideas. What did you do to fix it?

Sometimes, you and your coworkers might have different ideas about something. Your answer to this question about your behavior can help your interviewer learn more about how you handle conflicts. It also shows how good you are at having empathy, which is a skill you need to be a leader and work well with others at work. To answer this question, you can use the STAR method to talk about a disagreement and show how well you can solve problems.

Example: “Once, I worked on a project for a client who gave me very strict deadlines. My teammate and I wanted to make our work easier, but we had different ideas about how to do it. I let my teammate tell me why he thought his plan would work better, and then I told him about my plan. I realized that our ways of working were different because we each focused on what we did well.

Together, we divided up tasks based on what each of us was best at. This way, we could use our best methods without slowing down the work. Then we could move on with the work and finish the project by the due date.”

3. A SQL server is needed by a client. How do you figure out which one is the right one?

This question lets you show how much you know about servers and gives an idea of how you work. This question is also a test of how you talk to customers. Give an example of a similar time when you had to set up a server and what you did.

Example: “In my experience, the SQL needs to fit the size of the organization, so I would start by asking the client what kind of SQL they could support. I would also ask how much uptime they want, what applications they need, and if they have any special security needs. I once worked with a client whose SQL server had just been upgraded, and they were having a lot of application failures that were stopping business functions. After looking at the history of her database, I found that her information had been backed up and the server had been updated, but the new database couldn’t be used with the old one. I fixed the problem by upgrading the old database to an intermediate one and then upgrading that database to the current server.

4. Tell me about a time when you lost data. How did you respond?

Data loss can be bad for an organization, so it’s important for DBAs to know how to fix problems and get lost data back. Interviewers may ask this question to find out how you deal with problems, how you bounce back, and how well you work when you’re under a lot of stress. For this kind of question, the STAR method works best, so be sure to have a specific example you can use.

Example: “Before I move data from one place to another, I make full backups and check them for damage or loss. It is possible to lose data, but if you have a good backup, it can help lessen the problem. In one case, I did a test migration and found that the data didn’t make it across the system. After figuring out what was wrong, I found that the client had a number of old databases. There were many duplicate file names with different purposes that I had not noticed as duplicate files. I was able to suggest some software that worked well with the old systems and got rid of extra data to make the migration go more smoothly.

5.Why would you want to use a SQL agent?

This question about general knowledge can help the interviewer figure out how much you know about database servers. To answer this question, give an example of how you used it for what it was made for.

Example: “SQL agents let you run commands at set times or whenever you need to. Regular backups need to be done, but we want to do them when no one is using the computer. I usually set the SQL agent to do a backup every day at 4 a.m. or when no one is at work. So, users won’t be pulling and updating the database all the time. This makes sure that we back up all the information regularly without bothering users or putting the backup at risk.

6. What are your favorite database tools that aren’t made by you?

This question is meant to find out how familiar you are with the subject and how much you know about it. Using third-party tools shows that you can solve a wide range of problems. The interviewer may be trying to find out if you know how to use the tools that the company already has. Tell us what your favorite tools are and why they are your favorites. Use an example to show why you might want to use a tool from a third party.

“There are times when I need to connect to more than one server at the same time. I can do this with Navicat and also get data ready for backups. Most of the time, the projects I work on have a lot of data that needs to be checked for mistakes or gaps. I’ve worked with a client who had data from years ago that needed to be moved to a new system quickly. With the help of MSAccess and Navicat, I was able to clean up the data quickly and finish on time.”

7. Tell me about a time when users were upset with a database. How did you figure out what was wrong?

Database administrators need to be able to solve problems in creative ways. When a problem comes up, your boss may expect you to fix it. This question gives you a chance to describe the case, the steps you took to solve it, and the tools you used. You can use the STAR method to answer this question, just like you would for other questions like “Tell me about a time when…”

Example: “I usually check the database myself to see if it’s broken in any way. When there are a lot of open tickets about an issue, that’s where I start my analysis. Once, users told me that an application was running too slowly. The first thing I thought was that it was a matter of memory. I changed the way the memory was set up, and everything went back to normal. When the problem happened more often, I upgraded the memory to fix it.”

Know what you want to sell.

Your selling points are your hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills are the technical skills you use every day to do things. Soft skills are strengths that an individual has that benefit the organization. Individual strengths include the ability to communicate, to be creative, and to solve problems.

Answer in as much detail as you can.

Show an interviewer how you can help the company by giving complete and honest answers to their questions. Keep your answers short, but give as much detail as you can. Talk about relevant experiences that show what you’re good at.

Ask questions

You might be asked if you have any questions at the end of the interview. Use this as a chance to show that you want the job, know about the company, and want to know what you would be doing in the role.
