When did you first know that you wanted to be a graphic designer?
This is a question that someone who is interviewing you for a job in graphic design might ask to learn more about how you got started in the field. Your answer should give as much information as you can about the event or situation and show how much you care about graphic design.
Example: “When I was a senior in high school, I realized for the first time that I liked graphic design. In my business class, we had to make an infographic and a logo for a fake company. Before that, I thought of myself as an artist and liked to paint and write, but I had never tried to use those skills in a digital way. I thought it was interesting, so I decided to go to school for it.”

How would you answer a client who didn’t like one of your designs?
The interviewer could ask you this question to see how well you deal with criticism. Your answer should show that you see the situation and how you handle it in a positive light.
Example: “Negative feedback is always disappointing, since you want to do your best work to represent your company and make the client happy. In these situations, I would use the client’s feedback to rework the project to fit their new vision and change my design based on what they didn’t like.”
Do you know how to use the design programs you’d need for this job?
This question is meant to test how well you understood the job description and the qualifications a good candidate should have. A good answer should include the names of the design programs that a candidate should know and examples of when you used those programs.
Example: “I’ve used Adobe Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and InDesign a lot in the past for graphic design projects. At my current job, I use Dreamweaver to write new code and make websites that look good and are up to date for clients. I used the features of Adobe Illustrator to make company logos, and I used InDesign to make marketing materials like posters, brochures, and magazine interior layouts.”
How would you tell someone who knows nothing about graphic design about color theory?
With this question, the interviewer wants to find out what you know about graphic design and what terms you know. Your answer should use everyday language to explain what color theory is.
Example: “Color theory is a big part of graphic design because it says that colors have a big effect on how people react to a design.
