Common AI Interview Questions to Help You Get Ready

In the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning are used in a lot of different ways. You will need to show your skills in an interview if you want to work in AI research, development, or application. When preparing for an interview for a job in AI, machine learning, or research and development, it can help to know what to expect from the interviewer. In this article, we talk about AI interview questions you might be asked and give you some sample answers to help you get ready and make a good impression. Common AI Interview Questions

General questions

Simple interview questions like the ones below can help an employer learn more about you and decide if you are a good fit for their company and the job.

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • When you’re not at work, what do you like to do with technology?
  • How did you hear about our company?
  • Why do you think you should get the job?
  • What are your best technical skills?
  • What kinds of technical programs are you currently learning?
  • What do you want to do?
  • What do you want to accomplish in your first three months on the job?
  • How do you keep up with all the new developments in AI?
  • Do you have questions about the role?

Questions about your past and present

Employers will want to know what you know about machine learning and artificial intelligence. This will show them how skilled and qualified you are. Take a look at the following examples to get an idea of what to expect:

  • How did you decide to focus on AI?
  • How would you describe yourself?
  • How well do you understand how computers learn?
  • How much experience do you have with putting AI into place?
  • Which part of working with AI systems do you like the most?
  • Have you done tasks that involved automation before?
  • How do you keep track of and organize many projects?
  • What is one project you worked on that helped your employer succeed or get better?
  • Have you ever been in charge of something at a job?
  • How do you go about working with other people?

In-depth questions

The interviewer is also likely to dig deeper into AI and machine learning, and they may want to know how you do specific tasks, apply research, and build applications for AI systems. The questions below can help you get ready for a detailed conversation about your expertise in your field:

  • What kinds of AI programming languages do you know?
  • What is one thing you find hard about working with AI systems?
  • Do you have any experience putting AI systems to use in cybersecurity?
  • Have you ever used deep learning in a project you worked on?
  • What was one project you worked on that didn’t go the way you thought it would?
  • What do you think the good things about expert systems are?
  • What machine learning processes have you helped with in the past?
  • How do you use AI algorithms instead of algorithms for machine learning?
  • Why is artificial intelligence not possible without neural networks?
  • How do you make sure that the machine learning algorithms you use are complete?

Example AI questions and answers

Here are some examples of questions and answers about AI that can help you get ready for your interview:

What are some of the things you’ve used AI for?

Artificial intelligence can be used in a lot of different ways and processes, and the interviewer may want to know about the specific ways you have used AI. Show how you pay attention to details, can solve problems, and can come up with creative solutions.

Example: “In my past jobs, I used voice command systems a lot. Natural language processing and speech recognition were the main AI features I worked on for my projects. For many of these projects, I used different kinds of audio programming to teach the systems how to understand differences in speech patterns, vocal tone, and language. Many of the things I worked on led to successful product campaigns for virtual assistant technologies that were already popular.”

What is so important about machine learning in artificial intelligence?

The interviewer wants to know if you know everything there is to know about AI and how to use it. Explain how you use machine learning in your AI development to show off your technical skills.

“Machine learning is an important part of AI that is used to teach computer systems, neural networks, and intelligent agents how to learn from recognizing patterns and repeating trends, so that the system gets better at doing tasks as time goes on. ML is important for real-world AI applications because it lets me automate the learning process so I don’t have to keep putting in search and function parameters.

How do you decide which algorithm to use to solve problems in AI and machine learning?

This question lets the interviewer find out how you use your mathematical and technical skills to find, classify, and solve machine learning problems. Use algorithms in your development projects to show that you can solve problems, think critically, and have unique knowledge.

Example: “It really depends on the problem I’m trying to solve, since there are many different machine learning algorithms with different constraints for each.” But I usually use a general method to find, sort, and use algorithms to figure out which input is best. To do this, I put a problem into a category based on the type of input I have and what I want the problem to do.

Different labels can tell me more about what kind of problem it is, but none of them can tell me that it’s an unsupervised learning problem. When I know what kind of problem I’m working on, I look at the data and choose an algorithm based on space, training and build time, accuracy, scalability, and complexity.

How would you use AI that is very smart?

Employers want to know that you know how each area of artificial intelligence can be used in different ways. Use your technical knowledge and deep understanding of your field to explain how you would use different AI functions in your work.

“Strong AI is needed when you want computer systems and neural networks to successfully imitate human intelligence and behavior. I haven’t worked with advanced and strong AI systems, but some of the parts and programming I worked on in my last job led to the development of advanced robotics for national security agencies and aerospace defense systems. In contrast to weak AI, the applications I worked on for large strong AI projects included wide-area learning, intelligence on par with humans, and data processing with associative and clustered properties.

What is a project that you used weak AI for?

This is another part of AI that you might have to talk about during your interview. Tell us about projects you’ve worked on in the past and how your contributions helped your organization.

“Weak AI has a lot of useful uses, such as doing simple search and retrieval tasks and giving a limited scope that makes it easy to use. One project I worked on with a team at my last job was a voice-command app that helped popular mobile navigation apps work better. We mostly used supervised learning for the weak AI we built, but the parameters we set also allowed for some unsupervised learning to help with speech recognition and language processing. This project was a success and became one of the leading application support systems for many of the most popular map and GPS navigation tools for mobile users.
